WP fields Png Eng Huat as Hougang by-election candidate

The Workers’ Party has unveiled Mr Png Eng Huat as its candidate for the Hougang by-election.

The 50-year-old businessman was introduced by WP chief Low Thia Khiang at a media conference held at the party’s Syed Alwi Road headquarters on Thursday afternoon.

He has been tipped to be the WP’s man in Hougang ever since he was put in charge of the party’s grassroots arm for the ward in February, after former MP Yaw Shin Leong was expelled for not coming clean on his alleged extramarital affairs.

Mr Png will now go head on against Mr Desmond Choo, 34, who was confirmed as the People’s Action Party’s candidate earlier in the day. Both candidates were unveiled a day after President Tony Tan Keng Yam issued the writ for the by-election, setting Nomination Day on May 16.

Mr Png, who sits on the WP’s central executive council as its deputy webmaster, stood in East Coast GRC in last year’s general election.
