Rui En and Elvin Ng on Star Awards 2012 Singapore

SINGAPORE: Singapore actress Rui En and actor Elvin Ng won the Favourite Onscreen Couple award at the Star Awards 2012 Show 1 on Sunday, which recognizes the top talents both in front of, and behind the camera in local Mandarin television.

The pair, who played lovers in the Mandarin drama “Code of Honour”, attributed their win to their fan clubs, which had worked together to garner votes in order to make sure ‘Ruivin’ – a term their fans coined to describe their onscreen pairing – won the award.

“I never thought there’d be alliances in the entertainment industry,” Ng joked, backstage after the ceremony.”I feel quite safe with the support of Elvin’s fans,” said Rui En with a smile, adding that she intends to give the trophy to their fans.”I feel this belongs to them!”

Rui En and Ng also won the awards for Favourite Female Character (for Rui En’s portrayal of a spoilt rich girl in “A Tale Of Two Cities”) and Favourite Male Character (for Ng’s portrayal of a dashing police officer in “C.L.I.F”) respectively.

Other winners include popular television host Bryan Wong, who took home the award for Favourite Variety Host and Chong Liung Man, who won the award for Best Director.

In addition Singapore actor Desmond Tan was named the winner of this year’s Rocket Award, an award given to the artiste who has shown the most improvement in the past year.

“It’s really unexpected!” said Tan, who revealed that he had often felt “dejected” after seeing his peers, and even newcomers receive awards, while he went home empty-handed.

The strapping actor expressed that winning the award erased the “feelings of uncertainty” he had experienced thus far, and said it would spur him to “turn in even better performances in the future”.

“I will continue to work hard!” declared Tan, as he raised his trophy once more for the cameras. This year’s Star Awards Show 1 saw a slew of past stars such as Huang Bi Ren, Yang Li Bing, Zheng Wan Ling, Vincent Ng, Moses Lim and Chen Xiu Huan turn up to present the awards.

But the highlight of the awards ceremony were the outrageously funny skits by Guo Liang, Dennis Chew, Sharon Aw, as well as a number of other artistes, which irreverently poked fun at the foibles of the stars, and made light of the local showbiz controversies that surfaced in recent years.
