Earthquake in Singapore Today 8.7 Magnitude Tsunami Warning Issued

Magnitude 8.7 Earthquake Strikes Near Indonesia:The United States Geological Survey (USGS) announces that a significant, magnitude 8.7 earthquake took place off the west coast of northern Sumatra, in Indonesia, at 08:38:38 UTC (04:38 EDT) today.

Officials with the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center immediately issued a tsunami warning for several countries, including Indonesia, India, Australia, Thailand, Malaysia, Iran, South Africa and Singapore.

The tremor occurred at 2.0ºN and 92.5ºE, reports indicate. Due to the location of the earthquake, a tsunami generated from its epicenter could easily spread throughout the Pacific and Indian oceans, reaching Singapore before midnight today (April 11).

Media Corp, the National Environment Agency and the police said they had received calls from the public regarding the tremors.

Several callers said they felt the tremors over at Marine Parade, Beach Road, Bukit Panjang, Bendemeer Road, Farrer Road and Whampoa Road.

They added that the tremors were not as bad as those experienced in previous years.

Update: Another earthquake 8.2 Magnitude hit off the west coast of northern Sumatra at 10:43:09 UTC (11th April 2012).

Devi Singh, a Bukit Panjang resident, said: “It was about 4.50pm. I was on the computer at home with my mum-in-law and husband when suddenly I felt giddy while at the computer. My husband went to lie down, he thought he was also feeling giddy.

“But when I looked up, I saw the light swaying from left to right. And this (lasted) about 60 seconds. There were two other tremors that lasted for about 20 seconds.

“We did not leave the building because we’d felt similar tremors before – the other time (when) there were earthquakes and tsunami. So we stayed put in the building.”

A Whampoa resident, Tan Chi Ming, also said she felt the “shakes”. She added she rushed to her dad’s room and saw the chandelier on his ceiling shaking violently. “We just felt a bit of shaking, then it stopped in about three to five minutes,” she said.

Tremors were also reported in several states on the west coast of Malaysia.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said an Indian Ocean-wide tsunami watch is in effect.

India has also issued a tsunami warning for its eastern coast after the Indonesian quake shook major Indian cities, causing panic and sending people fleeing onto the streets.

Thailand has urged people on the Andaman coast to move to safe areas, while Sri Lanka has issued a tsunami warning across the island and asked coastal residents to evacuate.

JAKARTA -Southeast Asian nations issued tsunami alerts and urged people to move to safety away from coastlines after a massive 8.7-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia’s Sumatra Wednesday.

Sri Lanka, India, Thailand and Malaysia issued evacuation instructions as US monitors issued an Indian Ocean-wide tsunami watch after the quake, which according to the US Geological Survey struck off the coast of Sumatra at 2:38 pm (0838 GMT) at a depth of 22 kilometres (13.7 miles).

USGS had initially reported it as an 8.9-magnitude quake.

An analyst at Indonesia’s Geophysics and Meteorology agency said five of the nation’s provinces — Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Bengkulu and Lampung — were at potential risk.

Sri Lanka and India issued tsunami warnings while Thailand urged people on the Andaman coast, a popular tourist destination, to move to safety. Malaysia ordered a coastal evacuation.

A Sri Lanka government statement said potential waves could hit the island’s eastern coast by about 10:40 GMT and urged an orderly evacuation of the coastal strip. via Channel News Asia
