Sydney first destination for Singapore Scoot Airlines’ new budget carrier:Singapore Scoot Airlines’ new low-cost offshoot, Scoot, has laid a direct challenge to Qantas and Jetstar on home soil after revealing that its first route will be between Sydney and Singapore.

The medium to long-haul airline will start with a fleet of four Boeing 777s, which it is buying from from its parent, Singapore Scoot Airlines, and plans to increase it to 14 by 2015.

The launch of another low-cost airline is a direct threat to Jetstar and Malaysia’s long-haul airline AirAsia X, in which the entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson has a stake.

Scoot Airlines has also gained first-mover advantage against AirAsia X, which has long sought to fly between Sydney and Kuala Lumpur at least twice a day but has been prevented from doing so by the Malaysian government, which has a 69 per cent stake in Malaysia Scoot Airlines. The latter flies between Sydney and Kuala Lumpur.

Apart from Australia, Scoot Airlines has named as potential destinations New Zealand, North Asia, Europe, India and the Gulf states, where Emirates and Etihad are based.

The airline will operate from Changi Airport’s Terminal 2 and will offer two cabin classes, though the specifics of seats are yet to be revealed.

Singapore currently represents Australia’s sixth-largest international tourism market. Visitor arrivals from Singapore to NSW, in the year ending June 2011, rose to 92,200 — an increase of 16.8 percent on 2010.

Scoot is currently running a contest to give away two pairs of round-trip tickets. Sign up at FlyScoot.com or Facebook.com/FlyScoot or Facebook.com/FlyScootAU to enter. The draw will be held on February 20, 2012.

SCOOT airlines had no immediate comment on the details of the Times story, which said the unit could be called Scoot Airlines. The newspaper revealed that scoot airline will start off with just one Boeing 777-200 before increasing its fleet to four aircraft within three months and 14 planes by mid-2016. Information from documents obtained by the Times said Scoot Airlines planned to charge passengers for using wi-fi services to access the internet via laptops, tablet computers and smartphones. It also added that scoot airline flights was considering the feasibility of renting out portable devices for inflight entertainment. They are still in the initial stage of set up of our their operations and still working on building up scoot airlines. As the new airline named scoot, they are expectedly exploring various arrangements, but nothing has been firmed to date.

The new discount long-haul unit of Singapore Airlines will launch in 2012 with four Boeing 777-200 jets. That’s the word from The Associated Press, which writes:An invitation to bid for the supply of a wireless in-flight entertainment system posted on the company’s website revealed that the carrier, which may be called Scoot Airlines, expects its first plane on April 1, 2012.The document shows the airline plans to expand its fleet to 14 Boeing 777-200 and 777-200ER planes by 2016.

However, a subsequent report by Dow Jones Newswires appeared to cast doubt over the launch date.Dow Jones writes “the new low fare airline planned by Singapore Airlines hasn’t set a date to begin flights, a company spokeswoman said, denying local media reports of an April launch date.”

Whenever Scoot Airlines does launch, Bloomberg News says “the budget unit will have about 400 seats on each 777, compared with the 323 fitted in the two-class 777-200s operated by Singapore Air’s mainline unit.”AFP adds, eventually, Scoot Airlines is expected to fly from Singapore to destinations in Europe, the United States, Australia and New Zealand.

The Minister for Tourism, Martin Ferguson AM MP, has welcomed a new low-cost carrier into the Australian air-travel market.Scoot Airlines today announced that Sydney will be its first global destination, with services between Singapore and Sydney commencing in mid-2012.

Scoot Airlines is a low-cost subsidiary of Singapore Airlines.  Its Boeing 777 aircraft will fly medium to long-haul routes to and from Singapore.  First-year destinations include Australia and China.  Scoot Airlines also aims to expand into India, Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

“Scoot Airlines will enable more people to visit Australia and bring more business for Australian tourism operators,” Minister Ferguson said.“With Asia’s growing middle classes, Singapore is becoming an increasingly important hub for the regional tourism industry worth almost $11 billion in tourism expenditure.

“For its part, the Australian Government is proud of its marketing commitment to Scoot’s Sydney route through Tourism Australia.  More choice is good for passengers and good for the many jobs in Australia that rely on tourism.“Tourism Australia will continue to work with Scoot Airlines to attract flights to other destinations in Australia.”

Fly Scoot to Sydney:Scoot Air has announced that it will fly its maiden flight to Sydney, Australia in June 2012 – one flight per day. Interestingly, Singapore Airlines is already flying 4 flights daily to Australia, though it has repeatedly stressed that Scoot has no intention to take over routes from SIA. Nevertheless, it is a good news to passengers travelling from Singapore to Sydney as they soon have a cheaper alternative, besides JetStar and Air Asia X.

What does Scoot mean to Tiger Airways & SilkAir:A medium-haul no-frills carrier of SIA, Scoot Airlines flies to destinations five to 10 hours away from Singapore. Tiger Airways where SIA has stake, is a short-haul budget airline that flies to Asian destinations four hours away.

SilkAir, on the other hand, was set up by Singapore Airlines to replace SQ flights to Asian destinations like Penang, Bali and Siem Reap. With little overlapping on the routes, Scoot Airlines is unlikely to post a threat to them but will compete head on with other long-haul budget carriers like JetStar and Air Asia X.

Scoot Airlines heads on with JetStar and Air Asia:Ask yourself – if all three carriers, JetStar, Air Asia X and Scoot, fly to Sydney at similar fee, which airline will you pick? Backed by SIA’s image and branding, Scoot Airlines definitely has an edge over the two. But that also means passengers have higher customer quality expectations of Scoot Airlines than JetStar Asia and Air Asia. Can Scoot Airlines live up to the expectations, we will know next June.
