Naked video-chat scam couple face more charges

A young couple charged earlier with a naked video-chat scam have now been accused of extorting $150,000 from a student.Yap Siew Ting, 17, and her boyfriend, Alexander Soh Zhi Ren, 21, were originally accused of extorting $6,000 from the 22-year-old in May last year by threatening to upload his nude video on the Internet if he did not pay up.

But the figure has been upped to $150,000 in an amended charge tendered by the prosecution on Wednesday.The couple also face between three and 11 fresh charges.

17 year old Yap Siew Ting, who made the headlines last week after being charged for extorting money from a 22 year old NTU student Ng Yong Cheng, was remanded at Ang Mo Kio police station for another week together with her boyfriend Soh Zhi Ren.

Yap Siew Ting allegedly stripped in front of a webcam to entice unsuspecting men to do so as well, one of whom is Ng Yong Cheng, the son of a medical doctor who was extorted a total of $97,000 over a period of nine months under the threat that the footage of his naked body would be circulated online if he did not pay up.Besides Ng, five other men have come forward to accuse Yap Siew Ting of using the same trick to trick them into stripping naked unsuspectingly in front of a webcam. Yap Siew Ting would strip herself first to seduce the men into doing so and then used the footage to extort them into paying her.

According to media reports, Yap Siew Ting was born to a single mother from Indonesia and lived with her in a 3-room flat in Marsiling. Yap Siew Ting and her boyfriend are currently unemployed. If convicted, they could be jailed up to seven years and caned. A 22 year old NTU student Ng Yong Cheng was extorted a total of S$6,000 over a period of nine months by a 17 year old girl Yap Siew Ting in a shocking internet love scam.Yap befriended Mr Ng nine months ago in an internet chat room and somehow managed to persuade him to undress fully in front of the webcam to masturbate himself.The scene was recorded and was used by Yap to extort money from Mr Ng. She threatened to circulate it online if he did not transfer money to her.

Mr Ng made more than 80 transactions to various bank accounts of Yap and her accomplices. In total, they extorted $97,000 from Mr Ng and other victims.Yap was charged with her boyfriend 22 year old Soh Zhi Ren in court today for an offence of Extortion with Common Intention.Investigations are still ongoing.
