Banned Books Week 2011 : This is banned books week, offering a group of organizations book of love (including the American Library Association) to release the list of banned and challenged books. One of the entries seemed strange to me. “O Brave New World” was questioned in Glen Burnie and Seattle, for opposite reasons. At Glen Burnie, trouble was too sexual content. In Seattle, it was something else. The entry for “Brave New World”, notes: Parents complained that the book was “racist lot of derogatory language and misinformation about Native Americans. Lately, there have been some rather terrible franchise reboots occupying box offices, from Disney’s “Tron: Legacy,” to “Clash of the Titans.” But those failures pale in comparison to the wreck that was 2009’s “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” which was universally panned by critics and seemingly left its franchise for dead. Surprisingly, though, Matthew Vaughn’s “X-Men: First Class” succeeds in being everything that “Origins” was not: exciting, deep, and coherent. “First Class” delves into the relationships and back-stories of some of the most notable characters in the X-Men universe—namely Charles Xavier/Professor X (James McAvoy) and Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto (Michael Fassbender)—and succeeds in complicating an aging franchise without sacrificing the characteristic sense of action and adventure of the X-Men movies.
