Ever wondered where the best (and worst) places to sit on a plane were?

According to Men’s Health magazine, when it comes to your health it seems that the window seat is the worst place to sit, as it’ll increase your odds of suffering from deep vein thrombosis (DVT).So why is this? Cassie Shortsleeve (writer for Men’s Health magazine) explains:

“It’s not the physical location of the seat that’s putting you in danger—it’s that you’re less likely to get up when you’re plopped inside two strangers. No one wants to be that guy who goes to the bathroom five times.”

Forget the window seat next time you’re booking a flight longer than six hours. According to new research, enjoying window views from 30,000 feet ups your odds of suffering from deep venous thromboses (DVTs)—or blood clots—than being in an aisle seat. Some studies have suggested it can increase risk two-fold.

What gives? It’s not the physical location of the seat that’s putting you in danger—it’s that you’re less likely to get up when you’re plopped inside two strangers. No one wants to be that guy who goes to the bathroom five times. But maybe he’s on to something.

The Worst Place to Sit on a Plane Where is the safest place

“When you sit still for long periods of time, gravity causes your blood to pool in your legs, making it easier for clots to form. When you walk around, each step causes contractions in your calf returning blood to the heart,” says Susan Kahn, M.D., at Lady Davis Institute in Montreal, and author of the new DVT guidelines.

DVTs are rare—occurring in about one of every 5,000 airline passengers. But if you’re on a cross-country haul, make it a point to get up every hour or two. While seated, get your calf muscles contracting—flex and extend your ankles to help blood flow, Kahn says.

Travel a lot? Try compression socks, says Kahn. The pressure these socks put on your ankles and lower legs helps press blood upward. They are especially useful if you’re at a higher risk for DVTs (overweight, past blood clot, or recent surgery). You can get them anywhere from Walgreens to activewear companies like 2XU. Check out the other benefits of compression gear.

Where is the safest place to sit on an airplane?
Where is the safest………or moderatley safer spot to sit on an airplane incase of an accident?

The safest place to sit really depends on the type of accident and the type of airplane. Generally, however, the safest place is in the rear of the airplane, in an emergency exit row (or nearest an exit), not over the wing, and not next to an engine.

Most aircraft fuel is stored in the wings but some airplanes have fuel tanks in the fuselage as well (like the Boeing 747) and there is always risk (very small) sitting above the fuel tanks. The TWA 747-100 that exploded in flight near NY in 1996 is thought to have been caused by a spark in a near-empty fuel tank in the center of the fuselage. Everybody died, probably really, really fast.

Most large commercial aircraft have turbofan jet engines. Occasionally, (rarely) a blade can separate from the fan, compressor, or turbine while turning at 30,000 RPM and enter the fuselage. This is more concern on older aircraft. The engine cowling should contain the fractured blade but doesn’t always do so. New aircraft designs must be tested to ensure that fractured engine parts will be contained. On turboprop aircraft, rarely, a blade could fracture and enter the fuselage. It has happened, but is really unlikely.

Normally, I share weight loss success stories – WooHoos!, as they’re known at FatFighterTV. But today, I want to tell you about the opposite – a fit guy who is deliberately making himself fat.

Since May, Drew Manning has gained about 70 pounds on purpose. And he’s not done yet.

Drew is a personal trainer and has always been the “fit guy.” He’s now on a journey he calls Fit 2 Fat 2 Fit where he spends six months (he has about 4 weeks left) eating unhealthy food and not exercising, then he will take six more months to get fit again. Why? To experience for himself what it’s like to be overweight, how tough it is to lose weight, and ultimately show others how to get fit. But this is sooo extreme! And I hate that Drew is deliberately making himself unhealthy. I asked him all about it…

FatFighterTV: As someone who has always been fit, how can you stand doing this to yourself?

Drew Manning: It’s been very tough physically, mentally and emotionally to let myself go like this. The first couple of months were the hardest. I felt like I was going through withdrawals, just like any other addiction. I was jealous seeing people running, going to the gym, and being in shape.

Why a personal trainer is making himself obese… on purpose

Also see: How Cammy lost 100 pounds

FFTV: Are you concerned about your health?

DM: Yes, definitely. With a BP reading of 161/113 you can’t NOT be concerned. I haven’t felt in danger yet, but I still have 4 weeks left to go. People tell me all the time to stop now, but I look at it like this…..if others can live years with these unhealthy risk factors, like high BP, glucose levels, cholesterol levels, triglycerides, etc. then I can last another 4 weeks. Plus I want to show people how living a healthy lifestyle can change all of those risk factors.

FFTV: Are you enjoying eating all those unhealthy foods?

DM: Yes and no. To some extent, all of these foods that I’m eating (sugary cereals, granola bars, juices, white breads, white pastas, sodas, crackers, chips, frozen dinners, mac n cheese, etc.) taste delicious. But then I feel like crap later on and I get hungry again and crave those same foods.

Why Super Hunk personal trainer is making himself obese… on purpose

FFTV: You’ve gained about 70 pounds now since May – how do you feel?

DM: I’m to the point where I feel lethargic and uncomfortable. I definitely feel “addicted” to these foods. In the beginning, I did not like soda, but now I can’t go a day without, otherwise I’ll get the headaches, bad mood, etc. Emotionally, it’s taken a toll on my confidence level, even in my marriage. I don’t like the way I look in public; nothing fits right; bending over to tie my shoes or clip my toe nails has become so difficult. I’ve definitely taken those things for granted.
My journey from FIT to FAT and how to get back to FIT again!

FFTV: You mentioned that you want to gain an understanding of how hard it is to be overweight – what have you learned so far?

DM: I think the biggest thing I’ve learned is how intense and how real these food cravings are. I think a lot of people associate the word “addiction” with drugs and alcohol, but I do believe this addiction (to America’s processed foods) is real and very similar. I know I’ll never know exactly what it’s like for every person that’s overweight and I don’t claim to, but at least I understand better than I did before when I never had to struggle with this. I hope to learn a lot more in the second half of my journey, from fat 2 fit.

I really hope Drew makes it through all this okay.

What Is Autism?

Autism is a brain disorder that often makes it hard to communicate with and relate to others. With autism, the different areas of the brain fail to work together.

Most people with autism will always have some trouble relating to others. But early diagnosis and treatment have helped more and more people who have autism to reach their full potential.

What causes autism?

Autism tends to run in families, so experts think it may be something that you inherit. Scientists are trying to find out exactly which genes may be responsible for passing down autism in families.

Other studies are looking at whether autism can be caused by other medical problems or by something in your child’s surroundings.

Who is affected by autism?

Autism is much more common than most people think. There are over half a million people in the UK with autism – that’s around 1 in 100 people.

People from all nationalities and cultural, religious and social backgrounds can have autism, although it appears to affect more men than women. It is a lifelong condition: children with autism grow up to become adults with autism.

Different names for autism

Some professionals may refer to autism by a different name, such as autism or autistic spectrum disorder (ASD), classic autism or Kanner autism, pervasive developmental disorder (PDD) or high-functioning autism (HFA).

What Is Autism? What is Autism Spectrum Disorder?

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and autism are both general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development. These disorders are characterized, in varying degrees, by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors. They include autistic disorder, Rett syndrome, childhood disintegrative disorder, pervasive developmental disorder-not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS) and Asperger syndrome. ASD can be associated with intellectual disability, difficulties in motor coordination and attention and physical health issues such as sleep and gastrointestinal disturbances. Some persons with ASD excel in visual skills, music, math and art.

Autism appears to have its roots in very early brain development. However, the most obvious signs of autism and symptoms of autism tend to emerge between 2 and 3 years of age. Autism Speaks continues to fund research on effective methods for earlier diagnosis, as early intervention with proven behavioral therapies can improve outcomes. Increasing autism awareness is a key aspect of this work and one in which our families and volunteers play an invaluable role.

How Common Is Autism?

Autism statistics from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identify around 1 in 88 American children as on the autism spectrum–a ten-fold increase in prevalence in 40 years. Careful research shows that this increase is only partly explained by improved diagnosis and awareness. Studies also show that autism is three to four times more common among boys than girls. An estimated 1 out of 54 boys and 1 in 252 girls are diagnosed with autism in the United States.

By way of comparison, this is more children than are affected by diabetes, AIDS, cancer, cerebral palsy, cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy or Down syndrome, combined.* ASD affects well over 1.5 million individuals in the U.S. and tens of millions worldwide. Moreover, government autism statistics suggest that prevalence rates have increased 10 to 17 percent annually in recent years. There is no established explanation for this continuing increase, although improved diagnosis and environmental influences are two reasons often considered. Learn more …

What Causes Autism?

Not long ago, the answer to this question would have been “we have no idea.” Research is now delivering the answers. First and foremost, we now know that there is no one cause of autism just as there is no one type of autism. Over the last five years, scientists have identified a number of rare gene changes, or mutations, associated with autism. A small number of these are sufficient to cause autism by themselves. Most cases of autism, however, appear to be caused by a combination of autism risk genes and environmental factors influencing early brain development.

In the presence of a genetic predisposition to autism, a number of nongenetic, or “environmental,” stresses appear to further increase a child’s risk. The clearest evidence of these autism risk factors involves events before and during birth. They include advanced parental age at time of conception (both mom and dad), maternal illness during pregnancy and certain difficulties during birth, particularly those involving periods of oxygen deprivation to the baby’s brain. It is important to keep in mind that these factors, by themselves, do not cause autism. Rather, in combination with genetic risk factors, they appear to modestly increase risk.

A small but growing body of research suggests that autism risk is less among children whose mothers took prenatal vitamins (containing folic acid) in the months before and after conception.

Increasingly, researchers are looking at the role of the immune system in autism. Autism Speaks is working to increase awareness and investigation of these and other issues, where further research has the potential to improve the lives of those who struggle with autism.
What Does It Mean to Be “On the Spectrum”?

Each individual with autism is unique. Many of those on the autism spectrum have exceptional abilities in visual skills, music and academic skills. About 40 percent have average to above average intellectual abilities. Indeed, many persons on the spectrum take deserved pride in their distinctive abilities and “atypical” ways of viewing the world. Others with autism have significant disability and are unable to live independently. About 25 percent of individuals with ASD are nonverbal but can learn to communicate using other means. Autism Speaks’ mission is to improve the lives of all those on the autism spectrum. For some, this means the development and delivery of more effective treatments that can address significant challenges in communication and physical health. For others, it means increasing acceptance, respect and support.
