If more than one entry is made, only his/her latest application will be entered for the electronic ballot when the application period ends on May 20, 2012.

Tickets will be allocated via an electronic ballot system supported by NCS Pte Ltd. As such, tickets are not allocated on a first-come-first-served basis.

The balloting results are final and there will be no appeals.

As each ticket admits one spectator to the parade, children (inclusive of infants) must hold a valid ticket to be admitted to the parade.

Successful applicants will be notified from June 1 to 5, 2012 via their preferred contact number provided in their application.

Applicants who indicate a mobile number in their application will be notified via SMS and are to accept or reject the tickets via an SMS to the same notifying number by June 5, 11.59pm. Failure to reply may result in the tickets being forfeited.

The 50-year-old businessman was introduced by WP chief Low Thia Khiang at a media conference held at the party’s Syed Alwi Road headquarters on Thursday afternoon.

Emma Yong, better known as one-third of musical cabaret group Dim Sum Dollies, died from stomach cancer late on Wednesday night at the age of 36.

Yong had suffered a relapse of stomach cancer late last year and had to pull out of Dream Academy’s annual year-end show Crazy Christmas.

She had earlier been diagnosed with Stage 4 stomach cancer in January 2011. It was reported that tumours were found all over her spine, womb, pelvis and kidney.

While she responded to the first course of chemotherapy and beat the cancer into remission, it relapsed last September and she soon had to resume aggressive chemotherapy sessions.

Theatre actress Emma Yong dies aged 36

Yong is survived by her husband Jerry Lim, whom she married last year.

Fellow theatre actress Neo Swee Lin broke news of her death on Twitter at 12.26am on Thursday morning when she tweeted, “RIP darling Emma. Angels bear you aloft. Our performing family has lost one of our greatest talents. #heartbreak”.

Alvin Tan, founder and artistic director of local theatre company The Necessary Stage, told Yahoo! Singapore that Singapore had lost an “irrreplaceable gem.”

“I am shocked and sad. She’s irreplaceable. A local gem and talent who will be greatly missed,” he said.

Local entertainer Dick Lee said he was devastated when he heard the news around midnight.

“I remember meeting her for the first time in the early 90s when she did her first production Bugis Street, and the many musicals we did together, where she brought her great talent, charm and bright personality,” said Lee.

Yong’s life and career touched a wide cross-section of Singapore community, judging from newsmakers’ reaction to her death.

Businessman and philanthropist Frank Cintamani said, “This is so sad. Today is my birthday and the sad irony is she sang during my birthday celebration exactly four years ago.”

“For me, she is the best singer and she could carry her tunes better than any other singer in Singapore. It’s a big loss,” he added.

Chinese radio deejay and actor, Dennis Chew, also told Yahoo! Singapore, “Fate is so cruel, taking away a life just like that. Singapore has lost another talented artiste.”

Friends and fellow thespians were also quick to pour out their condolences on Twitter.

Nominated Member of Parliament and actress Janice Koh tweeted, “We have lost a beautiful actress and one of our most talented performers & singers tonight. Rest in peace, my dear Emma. Miss you.”

Actress Rebecca Lim tweeted, “Rest in peace Emma Yong. Your talent, strength, optimism & determination will forever be remembered. Thanks for being such an inspiration.”

Recent Star Award winner Tay Ping Hui tweeted that “Singapore’s has lost one of its most talented actress tonight. Emma Yong, the legacy you left behind continues to inspire us. Rest in Peace.”

Blogger Benjamin Lee (@miyagi) also tweeted and said, “Vale, Emma Yong” while local musicians Jack and Rai tweeted, “such a prominent talent in SG’s music and theatre scene. Condolences to family and friends”.

It is the third mass rally called by a coalition of NGOs known as Bersih (“clean” in Malay) over recent years, pushing for an end to an electoral system riddled with serious irregularities. Bersih has eight key demands: clean up the electoral roll; reform the postal ballot; use indelible ink for voters; a minimum 21-day campaign period; free and fair access to media; strengthen public institutions; stop corruption; and stop dirty politics.

The Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections or Gabungan Pilihanraya Bersih dan Adil (better known by its Bahasa Malaysia name “BERSIH”) issued its first joint communiqué on 23 November 2006.

At its formation, BERSIH comprised civil society organisations and political parties with the objective of campaigning for clean and fair elections in Malaysia.

BERSIH’s journey thus far has been both monum…ental and memorable. The public demonstrations of November 2007, which saw thousands of ordinary Malaysians take to the streets in support of clean and fair elections, was a critical juncture in our nation’s electoral journey.

Bersih 2.0 came about because 2 years later, the aims of BERSIH continued to be relevant.

The time has now come for BERSIH to continue its crusade for clean and fair elections independent of any political party. BERSIH is thus being re-launched as BERSIH 3.0, a coalition of like minded civil society organisations unaffiliated to any political party.

As the government and the regulatory bodies continue to ignore the call for free and fair elections, we too continue, unabated and unafraid, to call for the same.

Pakistan’s Supreme Court has found Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani guilty in a contempt of court case.

The three-month trial ended on Tuesday when defence and prosecution counsels concluded their arguments.

Mr Gilani had denied that he had been in contempt for failing to reopen corruption cases against President Asif Ali Zardari.

The prime minister could face up to six months in jail and could also be barred from office.

Mr Gilani had argued that the president, who rejects the corruption charges, has immunity as head of state.

Arriving at the Supreme Court on Thursday morning, Mr Gilani was surrounded by media and his supporters, some of whom showered him with rose petals.

“We are satisfied with the input given by our lawyers and we are also satisfied with the input by the attorney general,” Mr Gilani told the cabinet in Islamabad on Wednesday.

Mr Gilani, who has appeared before the court twice this year, had previously said he would have to step down if he is found guilty.

The case is part of a stand-off between the government and the judiciary, which many believe is being backed by the military as it pursues the case against the civilian administration.
‘Immunity’

President Zardari is accused of using Swiss bank accounts to launder bribes. He has long said the charges are politically motivated.

The Supreme Court has said Mr Gilani defied a court order to write to the Swiss authorities and ask them to reopen the cases against Mr Zardari.

The defence counsel’s main argument was that the case in Switzerland had been closed by a Swiss judge “on merit” and there was no justification to apply for its revival.

The defence also argued that Mr Zardari has international immunity against criminal proceedings for as long as he is president. Mr Gilani’s team had argued that there is, therefore, no legal evidence to find the prime minister in contempt.

The prime minister has the right to appeal the conviction.

His government’s battle with the Supreme Court began shortly after Mr Zardari took office in 2008.

In early 2009 the Supreme Court overturned an amnesty dating from the period of former President Pervez Musharraf which protected President Zardari and hundreds of other politicians from being prosecuted for corruption.

Scoot Singapore is offering a promotion of $88 for a Singapore-Bangkok return trip, cheaper than the current fare of around $200 from Tiger Airways.Scoot Singapore will make its inaugural flight on June 26, with Sydney the first destination.

Last year, Singapore Airlines announced the set-up of Scoot Singapore as part of its strategy to capture the fast-growing budget market in Asia, which has been dominated by Malaysia’s AirAsia and Indonesia’s Lion Air.

Scoot Singapore, the new low-cost wing of Singapore Airlines, has announced it will offer flights between Singapore and Bangkok. The new route will begin on July 5, 2012, with a daily round-trip flight.

Bangkok is the fourth destination for up-coming budget airline Scoot Singapore. It has already announced it will fly to Sydney, Australia’s Gold Coast, and Tianjin.

Tickets for all four destinations are available on the official website www.flyscoot.com. One-way fares from Singapore to Bangkok start from $44 SGD including taxes and fees.

There is, as always, more than immediately meets the eyes in the announcement today that Bangkok will be a new Scoot Singapore destination with daily return flights from Singapore from 5 July, adding to previously announced services between Singapore and Sydney, Gold Coast and Tianjin in northern China.

The Bangkok service joins Sydney as one in which the 100% Singapore Airlines owned wide body low fare carrier will compete at both economy and premium service levels with its parent.

And it will also take on Singapore Airlines’ minority owned Tiger Airways for the first time on the comparatively short route as well as Jetstar Asia flights between Singapore and Bangkok.

If we take the top estimate on the Singapore Airport site for the taxi trip into town and add the $SGD 5 airport taxi levy, we get a $SGD 43 ride from the airport compared to Scoot Singapore’s offer of $SGD 44 or today $AU 34.37 for its special introductory offers for new destination Bangkok, which will launch on 5 July. (Then again, some might prefer the MRT subway, despite having to change trains, as it costs next to nothing. )

Scoot Singapore has also reverted to some very low fare offers on its other routes after the initial promotional fares, and from Sydney for example will offer Bangkok for $149, which will clearly involve a night out and a day out in Singapore, since the scheduled arrival from Sydney is about two hours after the flight to Bangkok is scheduled to leave.

Not that this is cause for complaint if your plan is to enjoy Singapore with much more money left in your pocket than would have been the case flying Singapore Airlines, and even if you fly on one of Scoot Singapore’s offers to include legroom, food, drinks and checked luggage.

What is of more interest to airline watchers is just where Singapore Airlines wants to go, in every sense of the word, with Scoot Singapore, and maybe what it has in mind for Tiger?

It also gives rise to the thought that Virgin Australia continues to deal itself out of the high growth and not necessarily low margin international or Asia hemisphere low cost carrier segment.This may be a prudent strategy. But it could also prove a costly error.
